The Lifeboat College provides a variety of competence-based courses for inshore lifeboat (ILB) and Inshore Rescue Hovercraft (IRH) crews. D class and Atlantic courses cover boat handling, search and rescue techniques and an introduction to capsize drills. Command skills are continually assessed throughout the helmsman's courses which include advanced manoeuvring and handling in rough weather, navigation, helicopter operations and a capsize assessment in rough weather. The IRH crew course covers basic driving techniques, search and rescue and an introduction to mud and quicksand rescues. The IRH commander's course develops command skills and includes advanced manoeuvring on land and water, navigation, search and rescue on mud and quicksand and helicopter operations.

The Lloyd's Register Educational Trust funds training for new recruits

The Lloyd's Register Educational Trust (The LRET) has stepped in to fund the sea survival element of the new Trainee Crew course for the next 5 years. This amounts to support of almost £1M.
