Managing risk in the coastal environment
Managing risks in the coastal environment requires the systematic application of management polices, procedures and practices to the tasks of identifying, analysing, treating, and monitoring risk.
Risk assessments
The purpose of a risk assessment is to:
- Ensure that potential safety problems are properly understood
- Check whether existing control measures (including emergency plans) are adequate.
- Determine what is necessary to reduce risks to a reasonable level
Priorities unacceptable risks identified by the assessment and determine further action
The RNLI has developed a beach risk assessment model and a beach safety management model. The former determines a hierarchy of control measures required for each risk level. The latter gives recommendations on how to implement the resources effectively.
