Lifeguards

The RNLI operates over 150 lifeguard units around the coast of the UK.

We believe we can make a significant difference to safety on our beaches by providing an integrated rescue service from the beach to the open sea.

Last year RNLI lifeguards saved more than 60 lives and assisted nearly 10,000 people.

Why we need an RNLI lifeguard service

Most beach goers will have an enjoyable and relaxing time. Many will be children enjoying a holiday. But every year, 7,000 of them get into serious difficulties.

Lifeguards running costs

The direct costs of the lifeguard service are currently just over £8M for each year. This will increase as more beaches become RNLI patrolled.
