Falmouth History

1867 The RNLI lifeboat station was established and a boathouse was built.

 Two Gold Medals and four Silver Medals for Gallantry were awarded for rescues in the 1800s and early 1900s.
 
1940 A Silver Medal was awarded to Coxswain J C Snell and a Bronze Medal to Motor Mechanic C H Williams for the rescue of the 35 crew from the steamer Kirkpool.

1941 While on duty at Falmouth, one of the RNLI’s travelling mechanics was killed in an air raid.

1967 A Centenary Vellum was awarded to the station.

Framed Letters of Thanks were awarded to Coxswain W B West, Assistant Mechanic R F Twydle and Shore Signalman C J Barnicoat for their assistance given to the French trawler Martine Jean Paul.

1972 A Bronze Medal was awarded to Coxswain Walter Lewis Brown for saving the 10 crew from the Swedish Schooner Mina.

1978 A Bronze Medal was awarded to Coxswain Arthur West for the rescue of six men from the barge Mer d'Iroise .

1979 An Arun class lifeboat was placed at the station.

 A special framed certificate was awarded to the Coxswain and crew for their services to a large number of yachts in difficulties during the Fastnet Race on 14, 15 and 16 August.

1980 An inshore lifeboat station was established and the A class McLachlan lifeboat, was kept moored afloat in the harbour.

1982 A new crew room and store house were built at Customs House Quay.

1985 The Thanks of the Institution Inscribed on Vellum was awarded to Coxswain Vivian Pentecost when the lifeboat escorted the sinking French trawler St Simeon.

1987 A B class Atlantic 21 lifeboat replaced the A class.

1994 A new Atlantic 21 lifeboat Falmouth Round Table was placed on service and housed in a new boathouse.

1995 A new pontoon berth and refuelling facility was built for the all weather lifeboat next to the Tinners Walk lifeboat slipway.

1996  Thanks of the Institution Inscribed on Vellum were awarded to Coxswain Alan Barnes and Crew Member Peter Wood for the rescue of two crew from the catamaran Cloud Nine.

1997  The Severn class lifeboat The Will was placed on temporary service in place of the Arun class Elizabeth Ann.

1999 A Framed Letter of Thanks was awarded to Coxswain Alan Barnes for saving the tug Dido ashore at Manacle Point on 22 August.
 
2001 The new station Severn class lifeboat Richard Cox Scott was placed on service on 18 December. This lifeboat was funded from the generous bequests of Mrs Ruth Marygold Dix Scott together with other gifts.

2002 Framed Letters of Thanks were presented to Crew Members Mark Pollard and Marc Thomas for assisting two girls who were stranded on a cliff face.

2006 Bronze Medal awarded to Coxswain Mark Pollard for his outstanding seamanship when assisting to save the m/v Galina and her crew of eight.
