Arran (Lamlash) History
1870 A lifeboat was based at Kildonan, at the south end of the island
1901 The lifeboat station closed. The old station still exists adjacent to the Kildonan Hotel.
1970 A new lifeboat station was established with a D class inshore lifeboat (ILB). D-185 was housed in a small garage at the back of the quay.
1984 D-185 was replaced by D-303 Isle of Arran. She was funded from money raised entirely on the Isle of Arran.
1985 A new boathouse was built for the ILB on land provided by Mrs Anne Spiers. The cost of the boathouse was met by a bequest from the late Mrs Mary Isabella Currie in memory of the crew of the Shaw Saville and Albion steamship Ceramic.
1986 The D class lifeboat was withdrawn and replaced temporarily by a C class lifeboat in September.
1987 The C class lifeboat, C-520 Prince of Arran, arrived at the station in June as the permanent station lifeboat. It was donated by the Fred. Olsen Shipping Line.
1997 A new and larger boathouse was built near the Old Pier for a B class Atlantic 21 lifeboat, providing housing for the lifeboat and launching vehicle, and a crew training room.
1998 B-527 Percy Garon arrived at the station on 11 January and carried out its first service one hour later.
2001 The new station B class Atlantic 75 lifeboat, B-770 The Boys Brigade, was placed on service on 24 January.
A wide variety of calls are dealt with including capsized canoes, injured sailors, walkers in remote locations, medical evacuations, broken down vessels, as well as extended searches for missing persons.
