Macduff History

1974  A lifeboat was placed on service on 28 March for one year’s evaluation and was kept afloat at moorings in the harbour.

1975 The Solent class lifeboat Douglas Currie was sent to the station on 30 September.

1984 The all weather lifeboat was withdrawn on 8 September and the station closed.

1985 An inshore lifeboat (ILB) station was established in September with a B class Atlantic 21 lifeboat. The ILB and launching vehicle were kept in a building close to Eastern Pier.

The system of launching at Macduff is unique; it is launched from a mobile crane. The ILB is towed to a suitable site by the crane and it is then used to lower the ILB off the trolley and into the water.

1989 The Atlantic 21 lifeboat, B-578 The Rotary Club of Glasgow, was placed on service on 14 August.

1999 HRH The Duke of Kent opened a new boathouse on 21 September.

2006 The new B class lifeboat Lydia Macdonald was placed on service on 7 June.
