Lochinver History

1966 As a result of a coast review and trials undertaken during the winter it was decided that a lifeboat should be stationed at Lochinver.

1967  The lifeboat station was established.

1989  The Solent class lifeboat was withdrawn and replaced by the Arun class lifeboat, Murray Lornie.

1991 A new berth for the station's Arun class lifeboat was built as part of a redevelopment of the harbour by the Highland Regional Council.

1994  A new single-storey shore facility was built next to the lifeboat berth. It includes a crew room, changing room, workshop, store, toilet and shower facilities.

This building was funded from a legacy left to the RNLI by Mrs Eugenie Boucher in 1992. The building at Lochinver is one of eight boathouses funded by this legacy, all of which are known as ‘Penza’ lifeboat houses. They are named after the town in south-east Russia, which was the home of Mrs Boucher until the 1920s.

The seven other ‘Penza’ boathouses are at Aldeburgh, Clogher Head, Criccieth, Kilmore Quay, Newcastle, Plymouth and St Ives.

2003 A new alongside pontoon was put in place for a new lifeboat.
 
 The new station Severn class lifeboat Julian and Margaret Leonard was placed on service on 25 November.
