Kirkcudbright History

1862 The RNLI established a lifeboat station following several wrecks near the bar of the River Dee. A boathouse was built at Creekhead.

1892 A new boathouse and slipway were built at Cutlers Pool nearer to the mouth of the Rover Dee.

1928 The station’s first motor lifeboat was placed on service.

1962 A Centenary Vellum was awarded to the station.

1965 The boathouse was adapted for an Oakley class lifeboat.

1976 The Thanks of the Institution Inscribed on Vellum was awarded to Coxswain/Mechanic George Davidson for rescuing two people from a rock at the mouth of the River Dee in a gale and very rough sea on 16 May.

1985 The Thanks of the Institution Inscribed on Vellum was awarded to Acting Coxswain/Mechanic Stephen Unsworth for rescuing three crew from the fishing vessel Leon Jeannine, which was aground and breaking up on Milton Sands on 26 November 1984.

1988 An inshore B class Atlantic 21 lifeboat was sent to the station for a 12-month evaluation.

1989 The trials were successful and an Atlantic 21 was placed on permanent service. The all weather lifeboat was withdrawn.

The boathouse and slipway were adapted for the new lifeboat.

1991 The Atlantic 21, B-585 Peter and Grace Ewing, was placed on service.

1997 A new boathouse was acquired in the town providing crew training facilities and housing for the landrover that takes the crew to the Atlantic 21 boathouse, three miles from the town.

2006 New slipway boathouse adaptation completed in March.

 The new Atlantic 85 lifeboat Sheila Stenhouse was placed on service on 14 December.
