Tramore History

1835  A Silver Medal was awarded to Pat Coffey for rescuing the crew of the schooner Deux Soeurs.

1839 A Silver Medal was awarded to Coastguard John Weblin for rescuing 40 people from the wrecked vessel Prince Regent.

1858 The RNLI established a lifeboat station and a boathouse was built to the west of the town.

1861 Silver Medals were awarded to Honorary Secretary James Budd, Coxswain Richard Johns, William Morris Reade and Alfred Stephens for rescuing the crew of the wrecked brigantine San Spiridione. The lifeboat capsized during this service without loss of life.

1862 Silver Medals were awarded to Coastguard John Donovan and Fisherman James Gough for saving 24 people from the wrecked ship Queen of Commerce .

1867 A Silver Medal was awarded to Coastguard William Nelson for rescuing five crew from the wrecked brigantine Jane on 3 December 1866.

1868 Silver Medals were awarded to Coxswain Richard Johns and Martin Norris for rescuing 21 people from the ship Oasis which was wrecked during gale force winds on 12/13 January.

1869 A Silver Medal was awarded to Coxswain Richard Johns for ‘his long and gallant services’.

1875 A Silver Medal was awarded to Coxswain Stephen Pilcher for his long service in the lifeboat, and particularly for rescuing the seven crew from the wrecked schooner Fanny on 3 January.

1895 A new boathouse was built.

1900 The boathouse was moved due to the encroachment of the sea.

1924 The station was closed when a motor lifeboat was placed at Dunmore East.

1964 An inshore lifeboat (ILB) station was established in June with a D class lifeboat that was launched from Elizabeth Cove, on the western side of Tramore.

1971  A new ramp to improve launching was built.

1973 The Thanks of the Institution Inscribed on Vellum was awarded to Helmsman Frank Partridge and Crew Members Sean Walsh and David Kenneally for rescuing a boy stranded on a rock in Ronan's Bay.

1977 The Thanks of the Institution Inscribed on Vellum was awarded to Helmsman Noel I Power when the lifeboat was beached in a small cove in a gale and heavy seas to rescue a man who was lying seriously injured at the base of a cliff. A special certificate on Vellum was awarded to Doctor Hugh O'Brien-Moran for giving medical assistance to the injured man.

1995 A Centenary Vellum was awarded to the station.

1996 A new boathouse was built for the D class lifeboat. The new D class lifeboat, D-511 Margaret, was placed on service on 12 December and was operational all year round.

1997 The Thanks of the Institution Inscribed on Vellum was awarded to Helmsman Paul Tuohy in for rescuing a surfer in gusting force 9 winds and 5m seas on 6 June.

2005 The new D class lifeboat, D-643 Trá Mhór, was placed on service on 30 June.
