Courtown History

1865 The RNLI established a lifeboat station at the request of local residents and the first boathouse was built.

1885 A slipway was built on the north side of the harbour to improve launching.

1887 The slipway was extended to 21ft.

1907 Horses were no longer used to launch the lifeboat.

1911 A new boathouse was built on the seaward side of the harbour.

1925 The lifeboat station was closed and the all weather lifeboat was withdrawn.

1990 An inshore lifeboat (ILB) station was established with a D class lifeboat on 15 May. The 1911 boathouse was repurchased to house the ILB.

1992 The boathouse was refurbished to provide a boat storage area, souvenir outlet, drying cabinet, toilet and shower. On the first floor a crew room and operations room were also provided.

The boathouse was officially opened on 9 May.

1999  The new station D class lifeboat, D-548 Star of the Sea, was placed on service on 28 July. This lifeboat was generously donated by Mr and Mrs Ian Holman of Fermanagh, Northern Ireland.

2001 A new slipway was built.
