Clogher Head History

1826 A Silver Medal was awarded to Coastguard Thomas Lamb Wood for rescuing one person from a fishing boat. Two unsuccessful attempts were made to launch the Coastguard boat, and as he was the only crew member that could swim, he swam out to the boat with a rope tied round his waist and was able to rescue one man.

A Silver Medal was awarded to Coastguard A Barnard for rescuing the five crew from the schooner William Pitt, which was wrecked near Clogher Head.

1899 The RNLI established a lifeboat station and a boathouse with a slipway was built on the beach. This was used for nearly 100 years.

1900 The lifeboat was wrecked on rocks whilst on exercise, fortunately without loss of life.

1931 The station’s first motor lifeboat arrived at the station.

1988 The station temporarily closed on 23 May and re-opened on 9 September.

1993 A new boathouse was completed in February for the station’s new Mersey class lifeboat. It has main doors at either end to allow the lifeboat to be driven through, and also provides a storage room, souvenir sales outlet, crew facilities, drying area and workshop/storage area.

The Mersey class lifeboat Doris Bleasdale was placed on service in March.
