Walton and Frinton History
1884 The RNLI lifeboat station was established and a boathouse and slipway were built.
1902 A Silver Medal was awarded to Coxswain Henry Britton for serving 18 years as coxswain.
1918 A Silver Medal was awarded to Coxswain W Hammond and a Bronze Medal to Second Coxswain J C Byford for rescuing 92 people from the wrecked steamship Peregrine in December 1917.
1939 A Silver Medal was awarded to Coxswain T H Bloom and Bronze Medals to Crew Members Walter Jonas Oxley, Fraser Bacon, and Frederick Williams for the rescue of three people and a dog from the barge Esterel aground on Cork Sands.
1940 The lifeboat E.M.E.D. took part in the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force from Dunkirk. During the Second World War the lifeboat launched 57 times and saved 20 lives.
1941 Bronze Medals were awarded to Coxswain T H Bloom and Mechanic T C Brookes for rescuing three crew from the barge Martha.
1946 Coxswain T H Bloom was awarded a Bronze Medal for the rescue of 11 naval ratings from two fishing vessels in December 1945.
1964 Coxswain Walter Jonas Oxley was awarded a second Bronze Medal for the rescue of nine people from the Dutch motor vessel Merak.
1966 The Thanks of the Institution Inscribed on Vellum was awarded to Coxswain Frank Bloom and to each of his crew for their assistance given to the radio ship Mi Amigo (Radio Caroline).
1967 A Bronze Medal was awarded to Coxswain Frank Bloom and Thanks of the Institution Inscribed on Vellums were awarded to nine crew members. Sixteen men were rescued over three days in November 1966 from the steamship Ypapanti.
1973 Bronze Medals were awarded to Assistant Mechanic Keith Richardson and Crew Member Jack Barrett when the lifeboat assisted five people from a speedboat aground. The Thanks of the Institution Inscribed on Vellum was awarded to the Coxswain.
1976 A Silver Medal was awarded to Coxswain Frank Bloom and Thanks of the Institution Inscribed on Vellum awarded to the crew when they saved five people from the yacht Tsunami.
1984 A Centenary Vellum was presented to the station.
1985 A collective Framed Letter of Thanks was awarded to the Coxswain, crew and shore helpers when the lifeboat stood by the radio ship Ross Revenge.
The Thanks of the Institution Inscribed on Vellum was awarded to Coxswain Dennis Finch when six crew were rescued from the sinking Dutch trawler Lindfar.
1990 A Framed Letter of Thanks was awarded to Coxswain Robert Thomas Kemp for the rescue of four crew from the yacht Minstrel Boy.
1993 A Tyne class lifeboat was placed on service.
1995 A collective Framed Letter of Thanks was awarded to the Coxswain and six crew for rescuing two crew from the yacht Sadness which had run aground on the Longsands Banks.
1998 Improved crew facilities and a fuel storage room were completed.
2005 A new wave screen was completed, allowing a quicker response time and safer boarding for the crew.
