Calshot History

1970 The Nelson class Ernest William and Elizabeth Ellen Hinde lifeboat was sent to station on 25 July for evaluation.

1971 A permanent station was established.

1976 Bronze Medals were awarded to Emergency Mechanic Peter King and Crew Members John Street and Christopher Smith for two rescues in force 9 winds, rough seas and sub-zero temperatures. They first rescued an injured man from the yacht Rowstone in Ashlett Creek using the inflatable boarding boat as the lifeboat was unable to enter the creek. Then, after dragging the boarding boat several hundred metres over marshland, often up to their shoulders in water, they rescued two crew members from a local rescue boat who were aground on marshland.

1996 A new boathouse was built on stilts to prevent flooding during stormy weather. A new boarding jetty was built by Hampshire County Council for use by the RNLI and Calshot Activity Centre.

2001  Helmsman Duncan Christie was awarded a Framed Letter of Thanks for assisting three yachts aground on the Bramble Bank. Two people were landed from one yacht and the lifeboat saved four others from the yacht On-y-va. The other two lifeboat crew members received individual Letters of Appreciation.

The Executive Committee of the RNLI confirmed that an Arun class all weather lifeboat would be allocated to Calshot, along with a D class inshore lifeboat.

A D class lifeboat was placed on service on 25 January.

2002  The Arun class lifeboat, ON-1108 Margaret Russell Fraser, was placed on service on 4 April.

The last Brede class lifeboat left Calshot on 21 April. The Brede class had been part of the RNLI’s fleet since 1982.

2003 A boathouse extension was completed in April.

The new station D class lifeboat, D-609 248 Squadron RAF, was placed on service on 17 December. This lifeboat was funded by a generous donation by Squadron Leader CRB Schofield.
