Frequently asked questions
Small collector – ink cartridges only - freepost option
Q. I'm not sure whether I have an ink or toner cartridge to recycle? I am unsure which is which?
A. An ink cartridge is fairly small and will fit in the palm of your hand. The ink that comes out of an ink cartridge is liquid ink. Ink cartridges are used in most home printers.
A toner cartridge is generally much larger, it has toner dust and not liquid ink inside it. Most office printers use toner cartridges.
Q. I have only one or a few cartridges to recycle, will these make money for the RNLI?
A. If you only have one empty ink cartridge or just a few of these to recycle then we can offer you a freepost option to return your cartridges provided your cartridge codes are found on this freepost list.
If you have toner cartridges to recycle then you must use the large collector courier option as we don't take toner cartridges back by freepost.
Q. I've had a look at the ink cartridge codes on the link to the freepost list but I'm unsure if my ink cartridge fits into those categories?
A. We normally just take the codes back by freepost that are on the freepost list as otherwise the freepost costs are too high in relation to the recyclable value of the cartridge. If you are unsure if your cartridge can come back to us via freepost then please contact us to check.
Q. I've found my ink cartridge on the freepost list, what do I do now?
A. If your ink cartridge is accepted by us via freepost then please recycle an envelope/jiffy bag/polymailer to send your ink cartridge. If you still have your cartridge clip please reattach it to the cartridge if possible.

If you would like to arrange for a collection or have an enquiry about donating cartridges either individually or in your workplace, please contact Johnson Recycling:
- phone on freephone 0808 144 1800 between 10am and 4pm Monday to Friday
Please note: Johnson Recycling experiences high call volume between 12-2pm - by email
A freepost address is available that supporters can use to donate certain types of inkjet cartridges by post. Due to the cost of postage it is no longer cost effective for the RNLI to provide recycling envelopes. Please only use the freepost address to send back ink cartridges. Toner cartridges cannot be sent back via freepost so please refer to the courier collections. If you are unsure whether you have an ink or toner cartridge please check here.
