Lee asked... Will the RNLI ever build a lifeboat station in Nottingham along the River Trent? You could use ILBs.

RNLI answers...As well as the lifeboat stations on the coast, the RNLI has lifeboat stations along the River Thames in London, Lough Derg in Ireland and Loch Ness in Scotland. We use inshore lifeboats at these stations, but we do not have any plans to have a lifeboat station on the River Trent.

Jack asked... If you work on an all weather lifeboat do you get the choice of a dry suit or a waterproof suit?
Lifeguard icon
RNLI answers...It depends on the lifeboat and rescue the crew are going out on as to the clothes they would wear. If they are going on an all weather lifeboat this means they wear yellow waterproof trousers and jacket, yellow wellies, lifejacket and helmet. An inshore lifeboat crew would wear a drysuit (with yellow wellies attached), lifejackets and a helmet. Optional items include gloves and woolly bears (thermal undersuits) for colder weather.

Jack asked... If you are on your way to a shout are you allowed to bypass a red light if safe to?
Lifeguard icon
RNLI answers...Crew members normally live or work close to their lifeboat station and when they are paged to attend a rescue, they must make their way to the lifeboat station in the safest way possible. If they need to drive to the station they must obey all speed limits and traffic light signals. They are not allowed to go through red lights.

Shruti asked... Which is the furthest distance you have saved a person from the sea?
Lifeguard icon
RNLI answers...The RNLI lifeboats will normally go out to casualties up to a maximum of 100 nautical miles from the shore. The longest distance a lifeboat has ever travelled out to sea on a rescue is 75 nautical miles. The rescue took place on 14th October 1970 and involved a vessel called 'Jenny' which was 75 nautical miles off the Orkney Islands. This resulted in 4 lives being saved.
