Brief History of Station
Established in 1884, it closed in 1921. It then re-opened in 1967 when, as a result of a Blue Peter appeal, a D class lifeboat was placed in service.
In November 1970, crew members from this station travelled to East Pakistan, now Bangladesh, to help train rescue workers. These were among the first team of relief workers from the RNLI, to be sent from Britain to the disaster area. They received an award from the RNLI for their work, and their humanitarian efforts were also recognised by the Red Cross in the form of certificates.

In 1972, the D class lifeboat was replaced by an Atlantic 21, also a result of a Blue Peter appeal.
After one of its many rescues Blue Peter I lifeboat and Helmsman David Woollven were awarded by the RNLI for their part in rescuing four people from a sailing dinghy on 19 September 1981.
