Brief History of Station

Cleethorpes lifeboat station has had a chequered history. It originally opened in 1868. At that time 20 crew members were needed to row the wooden lifeboat and often local residents were called upon to help launch it! It was decided to move the station to nearby Grimsby in 1882.

In 1915 the station changed its name to Grimsby Dock, but then in 1927 the station was closed. For a short period in the 1960s an ILB was stationed again at Cleethorpes, but was now known as Humber Mouth.

In 1994 Cleethorpes joined 5 other stations in becoming a 'Blue Peter' station by receiving an Atlantic 21 as a result of the 'Pieces of Eight' appeal by BBC Blue Peter. Since the installation of the inshore Blue Peter VI lifeboat the station has received a special RNLI award for the rescue of two crew members of the fishing vessel the Dollard who became stranded in the Humber Estuary.
