Standards compliance

All web pages produced for the RNLI website are written to the XHTML 1.0 Transitional standard, use Cascading Style Sheets for presentation and aim to meet the "AA" conformance level of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. This means that the RNLI website can be viewed in all modern browsers, regardless of platform or device.

Some older browsers (e.g. Internet Explorer 4 and Netscape 4) do not comply with these web standards. A minority of our visitors still use these browsers and, as a result, will not experience the site as we have intended. They will be able to read the pages and navigate the site, but the site will look basic in comparison.

How to change the text size of this website?

If you are using Internet Explorer: to increase or decrease the text size, use the Text Size setting in the View menu (at the top of the screen). The default setting is Medium.

In browsers other than Internet Explorer, there will be a similar setting. For example, in Netscape versions 6 and above the option is called Text Zoom.

If you cannot view the movies/hear the audio files on the site:

The multimedia files on the RNLI website use the Macromedia Flash format. To view these files we recommend that you use the latest version of the Macromedia Flash Player, which can be downloaded from the Macromedia website. http://www.adobe.com/go/getflash.

Access keys

Most web browsers support shortcuts called 'Access Keys' that you can use to jump to specific areas of the site. If your browser supports them, press ALT + key (Windows) or CTRL + key (Macintosh) and then (in the case of links) Enter to use.

To use the access key features simply follow the steps below:

  • Press and hold the Alt key
  • Press the required access key letter or number
  • Press the return (or enter) key and your browser will take you to your required section of the website

     1  = Youth Section
     2  = Adult Section
     3  = Volunteer Section
     A  = Link to accessibility information (this page)
