There are lots of ideas in the free fundraising pack about what you can do to raise money, and you might have ideas of your own, which is great. Choose your event and work out how much money you want to raise from it. Pick a date that allows you enough time to prepare for and advertise your event.
Some ideas won’t need much more than a letter to parents. Others will require more planning up front but the whole experience will be hugely rewarding for everyone involved. So set yourself a realistic target and, if you’re doing something big, check if any other activities or events are taking place on the same day. You don’t want your event upstaged.Feel free to contact your RNLI Regional Education Manager for further help and advice.
Tell everyone what’s happening To make your event a success – advertise! On the CD, you’ll find a colourful poster to put up in the classroom so the children have a constant reminder of the event. There is also a letter you can send to parents that tells them about the fundraising activity your school is undertaking for the RNLI.
Also on the CD, you’ll find a ‘crash course’ on how to write a media release. Local newspapers and radio stations are always on the look out for ‘good news’ stories so sending them this information will help your event get press coverage.
What to do afterwards Once the event is over, fill in and return the information slip with your cheque (no cash please). If you’ve got photos, why not put them on the school’s website and ask the children involved to write about the experience, so everyone knows how it went. And make sure everyone who helped with the event feels appreciated, e.g. a follow up letter to parents to say ‘thank you’ and tell them how much money was raised. That way, they’ll be more inclined to put their hands in the pockets for the next event.
