Almost 9 hours at sea
Kirkwall lifeboat launched at 7.53am on 27 November. A 33m French fishing vessel, Sylvanna, with 14 crew members onboard had reported engine failure 6 miles north west of the Brough of Birsay.

Major sea search
Poole's all-weather lifeboat was launched at 1am when a report came through that people had jumped from the ferry. The weather conditions were horrendous with squalls and gusts of wind up to 50 knots. The Swanage RNLI all-weather lifeboat was also launched and an extensive search of Poole bay began.

Who we are

We are volunteers across the UK and Republic of Ireland united by selflessness, skill and courage.

The RNLI's lifeboat crews are mostly volunteers. They will drop everything to save lives in all conditions, day or night.

RNLI lifeguards are highly trained to offer safety advice, give first aid and perform rescues.

Committed fundraisers around the UK and RoI give up their time to help keep the RNLI's lifeboats afloat.

We provide 24-hour lifeboats and seasonal lifeguards dedicated to saving lives at sea.

The RNLI has 235 lifeboat stations, covering the coasts of UK and RoI, and selected inland waterways.

RNLI lifeguards patrol more than 140 beaches in England and Wales, helping hundreds of thousands of people each year.
